About Mega Millions

Mega Millions is one of America's two largest multi-state lottery games, available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Players choose five numbers from a pool of 1 to 70 (the white balls) and one Mega Ball number from a separate pool of 1 to 25. To win the jackpot, all five main numbers plus the Mega Ball must match the drawn numbers.

Draws take place every Tuesday and Friday evening at 11:00 PM Eastern Time. The starting jackpot is $20 million and increases each time no ticket matches all six numbers. Mega Millions holds the record for the largest lottery jackpot ever won in the United States, with a $1.537 billion prize in October 2018 and a $1.602 billion prize in August 2023.

The game has nine prize tiers, ranging from the jackpot down to $2 for matching just the Mega Ball. The overall odds of winning any prize are approximately 1 in 24, while the odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 302,575,350. Players can add the Megaplier option for an additional $1 per play, which can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x.

The current Mega Millions format (5/70 + 1/25) was introduced in October 2017, replacing the previous 5/75 + 1/15 format. This change created longer odds but also enabled much larger jackpots. LottoLabs provides comprehensive Mega Millions data going back to the game's early history, allowing you to explore frequency patterns, hot and cold numbers, and gap analysis across thousands of draws.
